Journey Into Retirement

Clocked out for the last time, badge in the drawer,

No more meetings, no more rush out the door.

The nameplate’s gone, the inbox is dry,

Who am I now when the title says “retired”?

Used to be the guy with answers on speed dial,

Now the mirror asks questions, and I just smile… kinda.

The routine that shaped me, forty years strong,

Feels like a shadow that’s already gone.

Time stretches wide like an empty highway,

No boss, no deadlines, just me and the day.

But the quiet gets loud when purpose slips away,

Who am I without the work that defined my name?

Tried the coffee shop crowd, the gym at noon,

Nod and small talk, but it ends too soon.

Old work buddies fade like smoke in the wind,

New faces are friendly, but where do I begin?

Laughter feels borrowed, conversations thin,

Hard to build bridges when the old ones cave in.

I miss the belonging, the team, the flight,

Now it’s just me and the long afternoon light.

Gotta keep moving, can’t sit still too long,

The days pile up if you don’t sing your song.

What do I do next? Where do I go?

In this retirement transition, let the new seeds grow.

Write a book? Learn to paint? Go walk the mall?

Learn that guitar that’s been hanging on the wall?

The world’s still turning, and I’m still here,

Time to rewrite the story year by year.

Time stretches wide like an open highway,

No more chains, just freedom in every way.

The quiet turns gentle when you find your own pace,

I’m building a life now, in this wide-open space.

Yeah, the desk might be empty, but the heart’s full of spark,

New friends on the horizon, new fire in the dark.

Who am I? I’m starting to see—

I’m the man with the map, and the road’s calling me!

(Oh yeah, the road’s calling me…)
